Who really knows?
Who will here proclaim it?
Whence was it produced? Whence is this creation?
The gods came afterwards, with the creation of this universe.
Who then knows whence it has arisen? —- Nasadiya Sukta , Rig Veda , Wikipedia
Does it pay to be a Fence Sitter? It does at times. Undecided voters or fence sitters in any election are a big deal. No Democrat Presidential Candidate ever cares to Campaign in New Jersey a blue state as the Democrats have it in their ticked column even before the start of the presidential election. In Short all presidential elections in America are focused on wooing fence sitters in so called bellwether states. In the Political landscape the Undecided ultimately tilt the result one way or the other. Somewhere else in the theological domain the fence sitters who don’t take any unequivocal position about their belief in God are addressed by the fancy word “Agnostic” a person who claims neither belief nor disbelief in God”. Leaving the Theists and Atheists aside most of the people are fleeting Theists or Fleeting Atheists in the guise of Agnostics as the situation demands.
Science always had an uneasy relationship with Religion and most of the Scientists known for their sacrosanct respect for evidence are often mistaken for Atheists by the Society as a whole. Society misunderstands scientist’s quest for existential evidence of God as an Atheists claim for the non-belief in God. In fact most of the scientists are Agnostics as they argue there is no evidence for existence of God. The famous American Astronomer Carl Sagan who criticized the notion of God identified himself as an Agnostic took a swipe at Atheists whom he described as being certain that God does not exist in his famous quotes
The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous. But if by God one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe, then clearly there is such a God. This God is emotionally unsatisfying. It does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity.
Those who raise questions about the God hypothesis and the soul hypothesis are by no means all atheists. An atheist is someone who is certain that God does not exist, someone who has compelling evidence against the existence of God. I know of no such compelling evidence. Because God can be relegated to remote times and places and to ultimate causes, we would have to know a great deal more about the universe than we do to be sure that no such God exists. To be certain of the existence of God and to be certain of the nonexistence of God seem to me to be the confident extremes in a subject so riddled with doubt and uncertainty as to inspire very little confidence indeed.
Carl Sagan’s life overlapped for a period of time with the life of another Carl, the famous Psychologist Carl Gustav Jung a contemporary of Sigmund Freud known for his theory of the Unconscious. He suggested Psyche was composed of Ego, Personal Unconsciousness and Collective Conscious a level of unconscious shared with other members of the human species comprising latent memories from our ancestral and evolutionary past. His Theory of Collective Consciousness had some parallels with the Universal Consciousness in the domain of spirituality and resonates with the tenets “There is an original and transcendental spiritual unity from which emanated a vast manifestation of pluralities” of Gnosticism a theological doctrine predating Christianity with a contrarian view of Agnosticism and claiming proof in the existence of God.
Agnostic, Gnostic, Theist, Atheist, Agnostic Theist, Agnostic Atheist , Gnostic Theist , Gnostic Atheist a list of labels in theology do intimidate at a first glance. We are better off having an understanding of these words to objectively analyze our relationship with God.
